Weighted / Advanced Level Courses
Weighted courses or advanced-level courses means those academic courses that enable students to acquire and master advanced knowledge. Such courses may be suitable for weighted credit (as determined by local school board policies and defined in the student handbook) in order to encourage students to take these courses and to be rewarded for the extra endeavor and academic performance these courses require. The weighted average will be calculated in determining the student’s class rank.
The courses offered at Leake Academy that have weighted credit include…
Physics, Trigonometry, Calculus, Advanced Chemistry, Advanced
Senior Math, and Advanced Writing
Leake Academy Students will receive a multiplier of 1.05 to their accumulated average for these weighted / advanced level courses. This means that a student that has mastered 85% of the required objectives for the course will average the grade as follows.
The weighted-grading system is based on a student’s Total Quality Points as determined by the following formula.
An example of the Total Quality Points of a non-weighted grade is determined as follows for a yearly average grade of 85.
4 x .85 x 1 = 3.40 Quality Points
An example of the Total Quality Points of a weighted-grade is determined as follows for a yearly average grade of 85.
4 x .85 x 1.05 = 3.57 Quality Points
The weighted average will be calculated in determining the student’s class rank.
Retaking Weighted Courses
Students who retake a weighted course may only receive the weighted credit the first time the course is taken. Students will receive credit for repeating a weighted course but not the weighted credit.
