Larry Bailey Therrell

Larry Bailey Therrell, 71, a coach, died Sunday, March 29, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. Services were at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Kosciusko with Rev. John Moore and Rev. Harold Bryson officiating. Burial was in Kosciusko City Cemetery with Jordan Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. An accomplished athlete, he was a four-sport letterman in the 1950s at Kosciusko High School. He continued his athletic career at Holmes Junior College and Mississippi College playing both football and baseball. He was selected All-Choctaw Conference in football, baseball and basketball. He served as coach of the Junior and Community College All-Star teams on four different occasions. While in junior high school, he joined the 31st Dixie Division of the Mississippi National Guard and served 39 years before retiring from the 213th Medical Brigade in Brandon. Along with athletic and coaching accomplishments, he gained recognition in six sports halls of fame:  Leake Academy Sports Hall of Fame, Mississippi Community and Junior College Sports Hall of Fame, Holmes Community College Sports Hall of Fame, All-American Football Foundation Sports Hall of Fame, Mississippi Private School Association Sports Hall of Fame, Delta State University Sports Hall of Fame. A member of Crossgates United Methodist Church since 2001, he served as an usher, member of the Staff Parish Relations Committee and member of Explorers Sunday School Class. Survivors include his wife, Paula; a son, Steve; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were Johnny Belk, Jimmie Bell, Drew Chandler, Roy B. Braswell, Aubrey Cox, Jerry Foust, Don Hambrick, David Oakes and Wayne Tatum. Honorary pallbearers were Doug Colston’s Thursday Club, George Barrett, Johnny Mack Burrell, Richard Chatham, Pat Hardage, Barney Jeffcoats, Mendal Kemp, John Smith, Mike Stubbs and Doyle Wolverton.
