May Day 2008 was held on Monday, May 5, 2008. The theme for May Day was Cinco de Mayo! May Day was held on the anniversary of the old Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo (May 5th). Red and green May Day t-shirts were worn by all elementary students and teachers. The program began with the entire elementary processing onto the football field to Mariachi music.
After the introductions, the pledge was led by John Forrest Sisson, a 6th grader, and the National Anthem was sung by Olivia Salyer and Julia Webber, fifth grade students. To begin the games, Coach Wolverton instructed the students to release their balloons. A balloon launch of over 300 balloons were off---Up, Up, and Away!
The field events-40 yard dash, 100 yard dash, 40 yard relay, balloon relay, over /under softball relay-followed. Each event was divided into 3 parts--1st-3rd, 4th-6th, and K4 and K5. Points were given for first, second, and third place winners.
At the end of the games, the green team had the most points and were declared the winners of May Day.
Mr. Crowe, principal; Mr. Boykin, elementary principal; Mrs. Jenkins, guidance counselor; and the entire coaching staff helped to make the afternoon work smoothly. The concession stand was open with homemade snacks and cold drinks for all to enjoy. A special thanks to Debbie Pierce, Lynn Thaggard, and other LA alumni for all their hard work.
May Day 2008 was a huge success! We all enjoyed another memorable May Day at LA!
